Exfoliation removes the build-up of dead skin cells that can leave skin looking dull and feeling rough. Done well, it's one of the most satisfying body-care steps.
Physical or chemical
Physical exfoliants — scrubs, mitts, dry brushes — work by gentle friction. Chemical exfoliants use mild acids to loosen dead cells. Both work; choose based on how your skin responds.
How often
Once or twice a week is plenty for most people. Daily scrubbing tends to cause irritation.
When to pause
Skip exfoliation on sunburned, broken or freshly treated skin. Around laser appointments, stop a few days before and resume a few days after, unless your provider advises otherwise.
Always follow with moisture
Freshly exfoliated skin drinks up lotion. It's the perfect moment to hydrate.
