The Art of Doing Nothing

Why rest belongs in your beauty routine too.

The Italians have a phrase for it — dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing. It is not laziness. It is the rare, deliberate choice to let an afternoon be unproductive.

Rest shows

You know the difference in the mirror after a proper night's sleep and after a run of late ones. Rest is not a luxury layered on top of a beauty routine; it is the foundation that everything else sits on.

How to do nothing, well

Lie down somewhere with good light. Leave the phone in another room. Read three pages of a book and then stop, if you like. Let your mind wander somewhere unplanned.

It will feel strange at first, especially if you are used to measuring your days in tasks completed. That feeling is worth sitting with.

A standing appointment

Try giving yourself thirty minutes of nothing, once a week. Not a nap you feel guilty about — a chosen, intentional pause. Many women find that a treatment appointment becomes exactly this: an hour when no one can reach you and nothing is expected of you but to lie still.
